The Fashion Industry can be a pretty tough business; looks fade, styles change, and let's face it, it can be a here today and gone today business. Can you (DE-FI)ne who you are if you were to lose everything today be it looks, career, or friends?? It takes more than just a pretty face to survive this industry, there are a lot of predators and if you do not have a solid foundation, it's easy to fall prey. During our Free Model Bootcamp in March as a part of (DE-FI) Fashion Week we brought in Speaker Marletae Sampson, to speak with our models about the Beauty Within. Mrs. Sampson is also a Probation Officer and Sex Offender Specialist for Montgomery County Juvenile Courts. Check out some footage of Marletae's story and words of wisdom that she shared with our #AspiringModels. #BeyondFashion #ItTakesAVillage #BeautyStartsOnTheInside #WhatDoYouDEFI #FirstFlightNowFashion

During (DE-FI) Fashion Week we hosted a Free Model Bootcamp and while we did touch on the obvious topics, here at the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC, we focus on the industry as a whole including the good, the bad, and the ugly. Our goal is to prepare you for success, and success often starts with the your support system. So who better to bring in and speak with aspiring models about having support systems in place than our very own Director of Community Outreach Khadijah Ali. 2018: Behind the scenes of the (DE-FI)ance Magazine shoot featuring (DE-FI) Model alum-turned-White House Black Market designer, Sa-Shai Daniels, in the parking lot of Creative Images Cosmetology School featuring photographer Misti Leigh.
Step behind the scenes of the 2018 (DE-FI)ance Magazine photoshoot—a whirlwind of creativity and chaos! With four photographers and 40 models, we pulled off an unforgettable shoot in just two days. Running behind schedule was all part of the magic, capturing raw, defiant energy that defines us.
2018 This footage offers a candid look at a (DE-FI)ance Magazine photoshoot where not everything went as planned. Despite a videography team violating agreed-upon terms and stepping out of line, the show went on. Behind the scenes, we handled the situation professionally, ensuring our standards were upheld while keeping the focus on the talent.
Hear from the models, who remained unaware of the challenges and shared their incredible experiences with (DE-FI). This is a testament to resilience, professionalism, and maintaining love and positivity in an industry where not everyone plays by the rules
This shoot was a (DE-FI) family reunion, bringing back makeup artists, welcoming models turned HMUAs, and packing two days with pure magic. Of course, the ambitious plan to shoot 40 models in just two days was totally John Flynn’s idea—at least that’s the story Caressa likes to tell (wink, wink). In reality, the bold vision was all Caressa, but hey, John’s faith in our ability to deliver didn’t hurt. Ambition, artistry, and a little playful blame—it’s all part of the (DE-FI)ance spirit!"
Creating that one perfect image takes more than just a camera click—it’s a symphony of hair, makeup, missing looks, and countless moving pieces. Shooting a magazine in just two days requires weeks and months of preparation, including 80-90 hours spent meticulously crafting spreadsheets, detailing logistics, and organizing every aspect of the shoot.
This behind-the-scenes look showcases the teamwork, laughter, fun, and constant communication that make it all come together. From styling chaos to creative camaraderie, witness the magic that fuels the (DE-FI)ance spirit
Innovation meets anticipation with one of our favorite magazine reveals to date! The audience had to text a number to unlock the big reveal—Linxin Li as the stunning 2018 cover model for (DE-FI)ance Magazine. This interactive moment brought the crowd to life, adding a unique twist to an unforgettable milestone.
Every year, we take our models on an unforgettable pilgrimage to Chicago, visiting some of the top agencies in the industry. Our first stop: Wilhelmina. This experience is designed to prepare and inspire our models for the next step in their careers.
While most rise to the occasion, not everyone fully embraces the moment—some choose sightseeing over seizing their dreams. The iconic silver bean may be tempting, but nothing compares to the opportunity to make an impression with the industry's best. Follow our journey and see what it takes to defy expectations and chase greatness.
True leadership means sacrifice, and Caressa exemplifies this in every way. During one of our annual agency visits in Chicago, the models, dressed to impress in heels, faced the challenge of a five-mile walk. To spare them the pain and keep them focused on the opportunity ahead, Caressa gave up her own shoes—finishing the journey barefoot so the models could put their best foot forward.
It’s this kind of selflessness and commitment that defines (DE-FI)ance and sets the tone for empowering our talent to succeed.
In the high-stakes world of agency visits, time is everything—especially when open call windows are tight. During one of our annual trips to Chicago, Caressa faced an unexpected challenge: some models had gone sightseeing without her knowledge, thanks to a chaperoning parent’s decision.
While juggling the frustration of the situation and the pressure to ensure our shorter models made it to their open call on time, Caressa kept her composure—live and on camera. Agencies know (DE-FI)ance brings quality talent, often stretching the rules for us, but every second still counts. This moment showcases the poise and determination it takes to lead with grace, even when the unexpected happens.
The clock is ticking, and the hustle is on! With cabs nowhere to be found and time running out, Caressa and model D'Angela had no choice but to power walk their way to the next agency visit—and they made it, proving their dedication and drive.
Unlike the models who opted for sightseeing, they understood the stakes. As Caressa explained during the walk, this is the real world of fashion. In big cities like Chicago, traffic can be a nightmare, and sometimes walking is your best option. This moment captures the grit, determination, and no-excuses mindset required to succeed in the industry.
Let’s be real—Caressa was pissed. When she realized a group of models had gone sightseeing instead of attending agency visits, potentially damaging (DE-FI)’s reputation and wasting valuable time, it took every ounce of restraint to stay classy. Smacking her lips and biting back frustration, she kept her composure, but the desire to throat punch someone was very real.
For those who committed to every visit, the results spoke for themselves. As for the ones who opted for tourism? Their careers stalled before they even started. Lesson learned: future agency trips came with a clear rule—miss a visit, and you’re left in Chicago to find your way home. At (DE-FI), there’s no room for foolishness when building a legacy.
Caressa finally let the truth out—she was pissed, and the sarcasm started to flow. “Really? We drove all the way up here, and you can’t come get us?” The long walk back to the car became a moment to decompress, reflect, and keep pushing forward.
And here’s the kicker: despite the unexpected detour and frustrations, Caressa, LaToya, and D’Angela still made it back to the van before the sightseeing models. Proof that determination and focus will always outpace distractions. The hustle doesn’t stop, even when the obstacles try to slow you down.
After a frustrating day of missteps and lies—complete with a parental chaperone spinning tales about being sick and hiding the truth about sightseeing models—Caressa finally found a moment to cool off in the van with some much-needed air conditioning. But not before calling out the chaos and the models holding up the trip.
Despite the challenges, the models who stayed the course and made it to every agency visit reflected on their hard-fought journey. They pushed through pain, frustration, and heels to seize an experience that kept their dreams alive. These moments (DE-FI)ne resilience and determination, proving they’re ready to fight for their place in the industry.
2021: In this behind-the-scenes look at A Generation of (DE-FI)ance fashion camp, instructor Melissa guides camper Jamiah as she creates a structured skirt for her runway debut. Together, they explore the Threads Boutique, examining different skirt styles, their structure, and the fabrics that shape them.
Melissa explains how fabric choices impact garment fit, silhouette, and how different designs can enhance or alter body shapes. This hands-on learning experience empowers young talent like Jamiah to understand the artistry and technicality behind fashion, preparing them to step confidently onto the runway.
In this sneak peek of our very first A Generation of (DE-FI)ance fashion camp, campers share their honest opinions about the process, their design goals, and the overall experience. Encouraged to be transparent, the kids didn’t hold back, giving us valuable insight as they worked through deconstructing and reconstructing garments to create their first fashion line.
While the camp was a success, we learned a lot—including the importance of separating age groups to avoid the 'little sister vs. big sister' dynamic. Jocelyn captured the fun chaos perfectly, sharing hilarious moments like Barney sing-alongs and kids just being kids.
This inaugural camp was our guinea pig group, and it laid the foundation for future camps, teaching us how to refine the program while fostering creativity and teamwork.
This clip from the A Generation of (DE-FI)ance Creative Youth Exploratory Boot Camp showcases the impactful work of our Junior program, designed for ages 6 to 12. Recognizing the immense pressure many kids face, we created a space where creativity becomes a vital outlet for self-expression and stress relief.
In this session, the kids moved beyond their initial project—tote bags—and focused on crafting their own sleep shirts and robes. This was also our first time working with children from various school districts, and we encountered the unique challenges of navigating diverse school and parental schedules. From differing school year calendars to spring and holiday breaks, it became clear that flexibility and adaptability are essential to our programming.
Much like the fashion industry’s seasonal changes, we’ve realized our youth programs need to evolve every six months to stay fresh and effective. This insight has shaped how we approach programming, ensuring we continue to empower young creatives while meeting their needs and schedules.
In this clip from the Creative Youth Exploratory Bootcamp, we introduce the participants from the Junior age group as they share their unique talents and interests. Part of our program's goal is to let kids explore and choose their creative path—whether it's sewing, knitting, painting, or even creating fragrances.
But for this video, make sure to turn up your volume! Alex, one of our participants, shares his incredible singing voice. While he’s shy about being seen singing, he’s perfectly okay with letting you hear his talent. It’s a testament to the supportive and empowering environment we strive to create, where kids feel free to explore, express, and shine in their own way.
In this heartwarming and hilarious clip from the A Generation of (DE-FI)ance Creative Youth Exploratory Bootcamp, we share the exciting news that TJ, a camper with a passion for flags, gets a special opportunity to repair the tattered flag at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.
TJ, ever the perfectionist, was ready to issue a citation for the state of the flag, but instead, he gets to showcase his skills and give it new life. Amid the excitement, Caressa reminisces about her Girl Scout days and starts singing "Taps"—a moment you may want to turn the volume down for. (We’re not liable for any ear damage caused by Caressa’s not-so-stellar vocal performance!)
This clip captures the spirit of the bootcamp—combining creativity, leadership, and a touch of humor to inspire the next generation.
2024 A Generation of (DE-FI)ance Creative Youth Exploratory Bootcamp, T.J. proudly raises the repaired flag at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. With help from two volunteers, including an Armed Forces veteran, T.J. showcases his handiwork and proves his flag-fixing skills are top-notch.
Special thanks to the Montgomery County Fairgrounds and Lori Page for giving T.J. this opportunity to shine. After ensuring the flag was restored to its former glory, T.J. graciously tore up the citation he was ready to issue. Fairgrounds, you’re officially back in good standing with the flag police!
This clip highlights leadership, creativity, and the power of giving young people the chance to leave their mark—literally and figuratively.
This video captures a (DE-FI)ning moment at the official New York Fashion Week kickoff party at Gracie Mansion. (DE-FI) owner and director Caressa Brown was invited by New York Mayor Eric Adams, Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, and legendary designer Thom Browne, the current chair of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
As a plus one, Caressa invited (DE-FI) designer alum Sa-Shai Daniels to join her for this monumental occasion. In a full-circle moment, Caressa wore a design by Sa-Shai to the event—a look that both of them would later see featured in Vogue.
During the evening, Thom Browne delivered an inspiring message about his early struggles in the fashion industry and the journey that led him to become one of the most influential figures in American fashion. Twenty years ago, he started with a vision, and today, he’s dressing the world’s elite and leading the nation’s most powerful fashion organization.
(DE-FI) is just stepping into its 12th year, and this moment serves as a glimpse into what’s possible. Imagine what the next decade holds for a brand that has already re(DE-FI)ned the game. This is only the beginning.
In this heartfelt video, Sa-Shai Daniels shares her reflections after attending the official New York Fashion Week kickoff party at Gracie Mansion. As a (DE-FI) designer alum, Sa-Shai opens up about the incredible experience of being part of such a prestigious event and what it meant to see her work featured on this global stage.
She also takes a moment to reflect on her journey with (DE-FI), which began when she joined the incubator as a high school junior. From her early days learning the ins and outs of the fashion industry to becoming a designer for White House Black Market, Sa-Shai’s story is a testament to the transformative impact of opportunity, mentorship, and hard work.
This clip captures not only her gratitude but also the pride and confidence she’s gained through her journey—proving that dreams really can come true with the right support and determination.
After an unforgettable night at the official New York Fashion Week launch party at Gracie Mansion, designer alum Sa-Shai Daniels and current incubator designers took some much-needed time to unwind. This clip captures a serene walk on the beach, a perfect moment of relaxation and reflection amidst the fast-paced energy of NYFW. Because when you (DE-FI), life really is a beach—balancing hard work with well-deserved moments of calm.
2023 This clip captures a meaningful moment during our journey from Queens to meet (DE-FI) alum Megan Antkoviak and Sa-Shai Daniels, who joined the incubator as teens and have grown into accomplished professionals.
At (DE-FI), our trips to New York are more than just business—they're about learning, building relationships, and fostering conversations that empower self-worth and growth. This is the essence of a true fashion community: knowing when to step up, step back, and support one another.
Our designers and incubators don’t just hear from one voice—they learn directly from industry professionals living and thriving in a constantly evolving field. These moments are filled with invaluable insights and connections that can’t be bought, only experienced. This is what it means to (DE-FI) life and success.
This clip offers a sneak peek into a powerful conversation between current Dayton Fashion Week Design Incubator participants and two alum designers who joined our incubator as teens and now work in the fashion industry.
These critical discussions reveal what our alum wish they had known during their early days in the incubator, the resources they now value, and how our incubator has evolved to offer more connections and tools for success. Sa-shai, who has navigated roles as a model, magazine editor during her time in the (DE-FI) incubator as a teen and now a designer for White House Black Market, highlights the dynamic, layered nature of the industry. Meanwhile, Megan Antkoviak emphasizes the challenges and opportunities of bridging the resource gap between cities like Dayton and major fashion hubs like Columbus and New York.
This is what it means to build community, network, and learn outside the classroom. Our trips to New York Fashion Week go beyond shows and high-profile events—they're about real conversations, authentic connections, and navigating career paths in a constantly evolving industry. It’s about peeling back the layers to discover what works best for each individual's goals and dreams. This is the essence of the (DE-FI) way.
This unforgettable moment captures the excitement when Caressa and Sa-Shai discovered that they were featured in Vogue by name for the official New York Fashion Week kickoff at Gracie Mansion. For Sa-Shai, this was a milestone that echoed her earliest dreams. When she first joined (DE-FI), she declared her goal of becoming the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue.
Through (DE-FI), Sa-Shai was given the tools and opportunities to grow—editing A Generation of (DE-FI)ance Magazine, landing on (DE-FI)ance magazine’s cover, conducting behind-the-scenes interviews, and gaining industry experience through internships during college. These experiences equipped her with the knowledge, skills, and connections needed to step into the rooms where it all happens.
This milestone moment didn’t just validate Sa-Shai’s hard work—it showcased the impact of (DE-FI)’s dedication to empowering talent to rise. With her image and name in Vogue and interviews with publications like The New York Times, Sa-Shai’s journey is proof of what happens when dreams meet opportunity. This is the moment where the designer truly arrived.
