The Dayton Garment & Textile District is a volunteer-based initiative established by the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC and consists of a diverse group of individuals and businesses with extensive experience in the fashion fabric, trims, and notions as well as apparel micro-manufacturing.
The mission of the DGTD is to enhance and reinforce the Midwest presence in the fashion industry, thereby improving the local economy, creating employment opportunities, and providing resources for local designers and businesses.
The DGTD offers apparel micro-manufacturing services by our tested sewist as well as being an online Resource Directory of boutiques, sewist, seamstresses, fabric makers, pattern makers, weavers, fabric dyers, beaders, embroiderers, unique fabric vendors and other textile related talent and businesses to build a community and networking registry of skilled sewn product talent...and yes, these are paid jobs!
Since its launch in 2013, the (DE-FI) has helped area designers build their brand, establish their clientele, produce runway events, and create editorials. As designers have spread their wings and grown there has been one persistent struggle...manufacturing their lines! Designers are currently booked 8+ weeks out and need your help to ensure that they are equipped to meet the demands for their designs.
Our MICRO-MANUFACTURING offers sewing services for soft-goods designers at the rate of $12-17.50/hr…you design it, we will sew it! This initiative also benefits area fashion designers that currently produce custom goods for their clients. This service will allow designers to increase production of their lines and grow their brands. We will also create an in-house line of products to sell, with proceeds used to fund this new sewing initiative partnership.
The DGTD will also support Entrepreneurial Development. We will provide the equipment, tools, support infrastructure and studio space to support sewing and textile related businesses. We can help you start and grow your business!

Creating Your Garment(s):To begin the process of having a garment created for you by a designer/seamstress/tailor, you will start with a one-time free consultation with a designer of your choosing to discuss your needs for the garment ie style, occasion, budget, and date garment is needed. Once details have been discussed, finalized, and agreed to, the process of creating your garment will begin.
A 25% deposit will be required in order for all garments to be started. This will cover the cost of buying the needed fabric and supplies for your garment. If you are having a custom design made, additional consultations may be needed in determining design and/or pattern selection which is included in your 25% deposit. Once your fabric has been purchased and/or pattern selected, another 25% deposit is due for the designer to begin constructing your garment.
Fittings: Customers are expected to make themselves available for all fittings and alterations when reasonably required and should be prepared to attend between two to four fittings depending on the complexity of the design. These dates will be determined during the initial consultation. The need for a 3rd and/or 4th fitting will be determined at the 2nd fitting. Both the designer and client agree that should a need arise to reschedule a fitting a 48 hour notice must be given.
The first fittingshould take place approximately 6 weeks before the date that you need your garment. The first fitting will give you the opportunity to see how the garment fits on you and allow the designer/seamstress/tailor to determine needed alterations. Always bring any accessories like shoes and or undergarments that you plan to wear with the garment for your fitting; this is important because they will play a role in how the garment fits on you. Confirm that the garment is the exact style, color, and size that you requested before the first fitting with the designer/seamstress/tailor. Closely examine any embellishments ie embroidery, buttons, beading, lace, etc to make sure there are no flaws in your garment.
A second fitting should take place approximately 4 weeks before the date that you need your garment. Remember to bring the same accessories and/or undergarments that you wore for the first fitting. The purpose of the second fitting is to allow the designer/seamstress/tailor to see how the alterations made after the first fitting look on you. Generally, the second fitting is primarily used to identify any minor alterations that may be needed for your garment. Unless the designer/seamstress/tailor has identified some additional alterations that need to be made the next fitting will be your last. Therefore, don’t be shy about voicing any concerns you have about the way your garment looks or feels on you.
The final fitting should take place one week after the second fitting. Before the final fitting you should prepare a list of questions you may have such as how to care for the garment, the best way to store it and etc. This will be your last opportunity to voice any concerns before the garment is ready to go home with you should no additional alterations or fittings be needed. Any additional work past the 4th fitting will have an additional fee attached after this point.
Try on your garment at least one more time to make sure everything looks great before you leave. We do NOT have a last minute on call designer/seamstress/tailor to make any additional adjustments.
